BSA Troop 1707 - Proud service to the residents of
Troy, Michigan since 1969
Below is a list of information for new members or a resource for the veteran scout.
Age
You must have completed the fifth grade, be 11 years old, or have earned the Arrow of Light Award from Cub Scouts; but be younger than 18 years old in order to join the Troop. Previous experience as a Cub Scout is not required.
BSA Application Form
Every boy or adult that joins must complete a Boys Scouts of America application form with payment of their dues. The Rank Advancement Coordinator has these forms.
Band
Troop 1707 has a band which performs at the 2 Courts of Honor during the year and other civic events. The Band Director is Ed Ahlquist, 248-879-6281, eahlquis@visteon.com. The band practices at Troop meetings.
Clothes Closet
Troop 1707 has a clothes “closet” which contains previously owned shirts, pants, shorts, etc. in various sizes. Inquire at the Finance Table about shopping in the clothes closet.
Dues
Troop costs include a $70 yearly dues fee for the first Scout in a family and $45 for each additional Scout, payable upon joining the Troop and then each October. This includes the Scout's BSA registration fee, one subscription to "Boy's Life" magazine per family and the Boy Scout Handbook. First year fees are prorated based on month of joining. See the Troop Finance Table for more details. The yearly dues fee for adults is $20.
Fund Raisers
We have only one mandatory fund raiser each year in which all Scouts participate through selling or a buyout. This is a Wreath Sale, which is held in October and November. Profits are used to run the Troop and offset outing costs. In the past Scouts have been required to sell 16 items, pay a $130 buyout fee, or make up the difference between items sold and $130.
There are also optional fundraisers Scouts and their families can participate in:
Ø Kroger Cards—Kroger donates $250 to the Troop for every $5000 we spend using refillable Kroger Gift Cards purchased through the Troop. Contact Mary Hunter, 248-703-5160 or MLQHUTNER@WOWWAY.COM.
Ø Scrip— “Scrip” is substitute money. In this case, it is gift certificates to various clothing stores, department stores, restaurants, electronic stores, home décor and improvement stores, etc. You order gift certificates through the Troop which purchases them at a discount. You pay face value and the difference is the profit for the Troop. ContactMary Hunter, 248-703-5160 or MLQHUTNER@WOWWAY.COM, for an order form.
Ø Flower Sale — Held in spring with delivery by Mother’s Day, the funds raised through this sale offset the Scout’s cost of Summer Camp.
Health Forms
Each Scout is to have a health form (blue) on record with the Troop's adult Health and Safety Officer. This form is to be signed annually by his parent or guardian with a new form required every three years. Adults need a new form (gold) annually if they are over 40. If under 40 the form is good for 3 years, but required to be reviewed annually. Adults need a TB shot every 36 months in order to work with youth.
Health forms are required by all who wish to attend an outing or campout.
Scout Shop
There are 2 Scout Shops where you can purchase BSA clothing, accessories, merit badge books, crafts, and some camping supplies. One is located in Detroit at 1776 W.
